Bishop Canevin Crusaders varsity ice hockey team recognized for team success, individual accomplishments

Keystone Oaks High School students who want to play ice hockey can play in a cooperative program with students from Bishop Canevin and Seton-La Salle. Since the team was formed six years ago, they have had tremendous success, earning their way into the USA Hockey Nationals for the past three seasons.

The seven Keystone Oaks students who are members of the team were recognized by the Board of School Directors for their individual and team accomplishments, including:

  • Finishing the 2023-2024 season with a record of 18-1.
  • Competing in the USA Hockey High School Nationals and finishing as semi-finalists in both 2023 and 2024
  • Earning varsity letters this year.
  • Volunteering extensively in the community, including for Veteran’s House, the St. Raphael Festival, Kane Hospital, and the Coraopolis Food Bank. 
Students were also recognized for their individual accomplishments:
  •  Freshmen Ryleigh Finneran and Carly Frizzi are the first two female hockey players from Keystone Oaks to play in the PIHL. Ryleigh was the youngest female player to score a PIHL goal and Carly was the youngest to score a PHIL assist. Freshman forward Finn Tiernan earned a varsity letter during his first season.
  • Junior Jack Misterka had 28 points this season and tied for second in team point at this year’s USA Hockey High School Nationals. Junior forward David Barbin earned a varsity letter this year, his first season on the team.  
  • Senior Eion Tiernan  was an Assistant Captain this year. He had 41 points this season and was the second highest point scorer on the team. He was a 2024 PIHL All Star and he played in the USA Hockey Nationals three times. He was named a PIHL and PAHL Academic All Star. He finished this season as the 20th all-time leading scorer for Bishop Canevin and he is tied for 11th in points in all of Division 2 hockey.
  • Senior Ayden Worstell is a goalie and he recorded 4 regular season shutouts this season and is finishing his high school hockey career as the 2nd all-time leading goalie for Bishop Canevin, with the lowest Goals Against Average and the Highest Save Percentage in Division 2. He was a 2024 PIHL All Star and he played in the USA Hockey Nationals three times.
