Food Service Department Update: Paid meals program slated to resume for the 2022-2023 school year

The United States Department of Agriculture’s free meals program for schools, which was approved by Congress in 2020, during the early days of the pandemic, is set to end on June 30, 2022. This will not impact the District’s Free Summer Lunch Program; however, it does mean that the District’s Food Services Department will return to pre-pandemic operations under the National School Lunch Program.

As we prepare for this change, families are reminded of the following:

Daily Breakfast & Lunch Program
Breakfast and lunch is available daily in all schools. For the 2022-2023 school year, breakfast and lunch prices are as follows:

  • Elementary Breakfast - $1.55

  • Elementary Lunch - $2.65

  • Secondary Breakfast - $1.65

  • Secondary Lunch - $2.75

  • Reduced-Price Breakfast - $0.30 (for students who qualify)

  • Reduced-Price Lunch - $0.40 (for students who qualify)

A full meal includes a minimum of three items, one of which must be a half cup of either a fruit or a vegetable. Meals that do not include at least three components will be charged as a la carte ($1.85 for an entree). The Food Service Department also proudly serves unlimited fresh and canned fruits and fresh vegetables to students who receive or purchase a school lunch.

Free & Reduced Price Lunch Program
Children may qualify for free and reduced price meals if their family meets the income guidelines set by the US Department of Agriculture, as well as:

  • All children in households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly Food Stamps, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits are eligible for free meals.

  • Foster children who are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals.

  • Children participating in their school’s Head Start program are eligible for free meals.

  • Children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant are eligible for free meals.

Even if your child/children previously qualified for free or reduced-price meals, you must complete a new application each year. Additionally, if your income changes during the year, you may submit an application at any point.

SchoolCafe
The Food Service Department utilizes SchoolCafe to allow families to manage and view breakfast and lunch purchases, make online food service payments, and set certain cafeteria account restrictions.

Families should visit https://www.schoolcafe.com/ to create a new account. To create an account, families will need to enter their name, email address, phone number, student name(s), school(s) and student ID number, which can be found in PowerSchool.

Families can add money to students’ lunch accounts via the SchoolCafe website using a credit or debit card. Families may also add money to students’ lunch accounts by sending a check or cash to the school. Please be sure to place the check or cash in an envelope that is sealed and clearly marked with the name of the student, their school, and direct it to the attention of the school cafeteria.

Families may also use SchoolCafe to:

  • View the current balance

  • View purchase history

  • Set up low balance alerts and auto pay

  • Submit applications for the Free & Reduced Price Meals Program
