Learning A Latte: Keystone Oaks High School Students Open KOffee Shop

Keystone Oaks High School is brewing up something special with the opening of its brand-new, student-run coffee shop! More than just a place to grab a morning cup of coffee, this space is a shining example of student creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Thanks to a $3,000 mini grant from the Grable Foundation and Remake Learning, high school students—under the guidance of technology education teacher Mr. Craig Wetzel—took full ownership of the shop’s design and construction. They transformed an unused space in the high school cafeteria into a beautiful, fully functioning coffee shop.

Using CAD software, students carefully planned the layout and selected every design element—from hardware to paint colors. They also used a laser engraver and a CNC machine - tools in their classroom - to add custom elements to some of the materials that were used. For example, if you look closely at the divider that separates the customer from the workers, you'll see the Golden Eagle logo mixed in with the coffee beans!

The KOffee Shop officially opened for business on February 20 and welcomes students and staff on Tuesdays and Thursdays during breakfast and all three Eagle Times. The shop serves a variety of drinks, including hot tea, hot chocolate, and both hot and iced coffee, with an assortment of cream and flavor options. A selection of pastries is also available.

More than just a café, this initiative fosters inclusivity by providing community-based instruction for life skills students, giving them hands-on experience in a welcoming and supportive environment. Under the direction of high school life skills teacher Mrs. Brittany Linsenbigler, students will work alongside their peers to complete a variety of tasks that keep the coffee shop running smoothly and efficiently.

This student-led venture is more than just a source of caffeine—it’s an opportunity for students to develop essential skills, build meaningful connections, and take pride in a project that enhances the school community.
