Keystone Oaks launches hydroponic program with grant funding

The Keystone Oaks School District's Food Service Department has launched an innovative Hydroponic Program thanks to a generous $20,000 grant from the Grable Foundation. The program aims to introduce students to the simplicity of hydroponic gardening while also providing fresh, homegrown produce for school lunches.

Fifteen new light systems have been installed in the high school serving area, allowing students to see the hydroponic process in action as they grab their lunch. By showcasing this sustainable growing method, the Food Service Department hopes to spark student interest in gardening and food production.

The hydroponic system starts seeds in nutrient-rich water, with growth periods ranging from a few days to several weeks. Already, fresh produce from the system has been incorporated into school meals, including:

  • Broccoli sprouts added to veggie wraps for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Romaine lettuce used in fresh Caesar salads.
  • Basil added to lasagna rollups for a delicious enhancement.

This exciting initiative not only provides students with healthier meal options but also fosters awareness about sustainable food production. Keystone Oaks looks forward to expanding its hydroponic efforts in the future!
