Letter from Mt. Lebanon Regarding Deer Culling Program
Mt. Lebanon has contracted with the professional wildlife management firm White Buffalo Inc. to cull up to 100 whitetail deer using sharpshooters. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has issued a permit for this activity to take place from February 11 through March 31 of 2019.

The goal of the upcoming cull and controlled archery hunt, which White Buffalo also conducted, is to reduce the high number of deer/vehicular crashes in Mt. Lebanon by 50 percent over five years.

This letter should assure you that all possible precautions are being taken to protect the safety of the public and children who attend school in Mt. Lebanon or close by. No culling will take place on safe walking routes, and the sharpshooters have GIS-produced maps that clearly delineate the 1,000 feet mandated gun-free zones surrounding area schools providing elementary or secondary education.

White Buffalo's certified field technicians will shoot from elevated fixed locations on private properties and in the following public parks: McNeilly, Robb Hollow and adjacent public works yard, the conservation district on Connor Road and the golf course. All locations will be thoroughly vetted by both White Buffalo and the Mt. Lebanon Police Department.

Shooting will take place when people are least likely to be in the areas; however, technicians are trained to assume that people or other animals may be proximate and will adapt their plans as appropriate to maximize safety.

Technicians will work on private property seven days a week beginning at  4 p.m. and concluding by 11:00 p.m. They will work in the  identified  public parks Monday through Friday only, beginning at 6 p.m. and concluding by 11:00 p.m.

Public parks approved for use in the program will remain open. Signs will be posted at parks where culling may take place. White Buffalo will notify Mt. Lebanon Police of where they plan to work each day. Police will monitor the parks as usual.

Parents and teachers may want to tell children to avoid the designated parks after dark and suggest they use sidewalks/established safe walking routes instead of shortcuts through private properties. Anyone with a safety concern should call 911 immediately.
