Keystone Oaks hosts 90 math teachers as part of National Math and Science Initiative training event
NMSI training session at Keystone OaksNearly 90 high school math teachers from across the United States participated in a two-day National Math & Science Initiative conference at Keystone Oaks High School on Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4.

Participating teachers instruct Advanced Placement classes in calculus, statistics or computer science. Among the presenters for the conference were Bryan Passwater, the Director of Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame, and Dickie Thomasson, a 40-year math teacher from Arkansas and recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2001.

Keystone Oaks School District, along with other conference attendees, is participating in the National Math and Science Initiative, a three-year program that strives to advance STEM teaching and learning by increasing the number of students taking and earning qualifying scores on AP math, science, computer science, and English exams. As part of their participation in NMSI, teachers participate in ongoing professional development, including a summer institute and in-person training during the school year.

Additionally, because of the District’s partnership with NMSI, students enrolled in AP math, science and English classes attend Saturday Study Sessions with expert teachers and also receive financial support for taking AP exams and earning a score of 3 or above on the exam.
