Girls basketball down but not out
On February 23rd, the Keystone Oaks girls basketball team lost to Beaver 58-45 in the first round of the WPIAL championships at Moon. This loss knocked them out of championship contention for WPIALs.
The loss was a tough pill for the girls to swallow. Regardless of the loss, the girls are still very proud of how the season went. They also may have another shot at glory. If North Catholic defeats Blackhawk on Friday, March 3rd, at the Peterson Event Center, Keystone Oaks will play at states.
The team is jumping at the shot to compete again. Coach Ron Muszynski knows what the team can achieve given another shot.
“After the loss, we were distraught. I couldn’t believe the season was over. I feel that the girls can produce so much more if they are able to take another crack at it. Due to lack of preparation and shaky officiating, we were sent home early. We won’t let those things be a factor again.”
All of the girls have the same drive for success. Senior Kristy Lippert wants nothing more than to fix what the team did wrong.
“The atmosphere before the game was so intense. I wish I could feel like that before every game. We learned new things and had a ton of excitement. No one specifically outshined anyone else because we play as a team. We are going to cheer for North Catholic on Friday.”
The leadership has cascaded down onto the younger players. Junior Keagan Brownlee isn’t satisfied with where the team finished.
“We didn’t play as well as we needed to. I want to get back out there and bring home a championship.”
Underclassmen Gillian Piccolino observed the older players and took notes.
“It is tough seeing everyone disappointed that we didn’t reach our goal. Life goes on after basketball, but it would be sweet to be a champ”.
Life is all about second chances. All the girls need is just another chance, and they believe they can redeem their mistake. All they can hope for now is a win from North Catholic.
