It's Not Too Late to Participate in the 2017 Kids of Steel Program
It's Not Too Late to Participate in the 2017 Kids of Steel ProgramWe are very excited to share that Aiken, Dormont, and Myrtle Elementary Schools, along with Keystone Oaks Middle School, is once again participating in Kids of STEEL (KOS), a youth exercise and nutrition program created by Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. (P3R). P3R is a nonprofit organization that is passionate about promoting the love of running and enhancing community access to health & fitness education and activities.

Since 2010, more than 10,000 children from Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade have learned about physical activity and good nutrition in a fun and healthy way.

The goal of the Kids of Steel program is to earn miles to run the equivalent of a full marathon (26.2 miles) over the course of the program and to try 26 new foods. Participants have the option to culminate the plan at the Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids marathon (1 mile). The cost to run the the Kids Marathon is $20 per child and includes registration for one adult to run.

To register for Kids of STEEL, please visit www.thepittsburghmarathon.com for registration information. Choose the race that corresponds to your child’s training plan which would be the Kids Marathon. Make sure you choose the school that your child attends to be included on our team. The Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids Marathon has sold out in the past, so please register early. Once you register for a race, your confirmation email will contain a program guide with training plans and training logs.

Children in grades 3-5 have the opportunity to train with Mrs. Watenpool before school hours on the six day rotation of 2-3-5-6. For every 20 minutes of physical activity, children earn 1 mile which you will log at home with the log that is provided. Any activity (ex. going for walks, after school practices, jump roping at home) can be logged as well.

This year the Kids Marathon is Saturday May 6th, 2017. More information will be coming home soon about a bus, tee shirt orders, and your log.

Please feel free to contact Mrs. Watenpool via e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone (412-571-6000 ext 5206).
