Track team races to victory
With a spectacular win-loss record of 7-1, the Keystone Oaks track team has managed to maintain their legacy of success, which has developed and matured over the last few years.
The team is led by senior captains Lauren Ragan and Danielle Super, both of whom have been greatly appreciated for their ability to boost overall morale and keep the team motivated and happy despite the physically demanding nature of the sport. Senior and thrower Emily Kalanish, a four-year member of the team, believes she and others “owe strength not only to the captains, but also to the cooperation and hard work of all the individual members,” and sees the team’s biggest asset in the “visible heart that everyone puts into their events, which makes it enjoyable and exciting to participate in meets”.
Surprisingly, the team’s most daunting challenge comes not from rival competitors and the talents of other top schools, but rather what Kalanish sees as the members themselves, whose status as a relatively small group makes the stakes even higher in a challenging division.
With the team already on a path to success this season, Kalanish thought it important to reflect on areas in which she would have liked to see improvement, stating, “We strive to get better every day whether it be running a second faster, jumping an inch higher, or throwing an inch further.”
And while her last high school season may soon come to a close, she continues to look forward to the future accomplishments of those who she will leave behind.
“I hope to see increased results every year, and while the win-loss record is important, I think that improvement should be the major focus,” commented Kalanish.
Additionally, she hopes to see a spike in interest for the organization, as the dwindling amount of participants threatens to compromise the team’s remarkable performance.
As for the remainder of the season, Coach Jeff Sieg was excited to announce that “the following girls and boys qualified for the WPIAL championships on Thursday, May 19th: Tara Gologram (100 m., high-jump, long-jump), Selena Canello (200 m.), Selena Canello, Danie Super, Hayley Frederick, Tara Gologram, and Izza Bodgan ( 4 x 100 m. relay), Emily Kalanish (shot put and discus), Tim Mazzarini (shot put), Christian Forisi (discus), and Danie Super (high-jump, pole vault, and long-jump)”.
He hopes for impressive results and to see these girls and boys move on to qualify for states.
