Dormont Elementary Hosts 5th Annual Science Olympiad

Dormont Elementary School held its 5th Annual Science Olympiad on Monday, May 23, 2016. The Science Olympiad is an elementary, middle and high school competition that promotes knowledge of various science topics. More than 15,000 schools in 48 states compete each year. The goals of the Olympiad are to improve the quality of science education, create a passion for learning science and provide recognition for outstanding achievements and performance for students.

Students in kindergarten through 5th grade participated in 18 different interesting, hands-on experiments. Students learned about bones and eyes, fingerprinting and solving crimes, created music from bottles filled with water, erupted volcanoes, built barges and exercised with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ athletic trainer.

The Science Olympiad is organized by 5th grade teacher Lori DeMartino and 3rd grade teacher Kim Puffer. High school students help staff the event and two parent volunteers - Jill Harvey and Jane DePippa - help to raise funds for the Olympiad.
