The kindergartners are learning all about manners at school and taking care of their library books. They are working hard at remembering to bring their books back each week! They will soon begin an author study of Mo Willems.
The first graders are learning all about the major elements of the Fairy Tale genre. We are making a Fairy Tale mobile that will illustrate the elements of magic, royalty, the number 3 and the common beginning and ending. Look for the finished product in a few weeks!
The second graders are learning the basics of the Dewey Decimal System for nonfiction books. They have already learned that Dewey "sorted" the books according to their subject. We are now learning about the 10 different sections of books, how they are numbered, and what kind of books are found in which section! It is an important library skill!
The third graders are currently reading different versions of the Cinderella story from around the world. Cendrillon is the Caribbean Cinderella, Yeh-Shen is from China, Cinderella is from Europe and Cinder-Elly hails from New York City. The students are comparing and contrasting the stories as we go along.
The 4th graders are getting a new view of poetry!! Students are making observations about the genre of poetry and likening it to a jar. We will be making connections between poetry and music and art.
The 5th grade students are currently learning about the different reference materials found in the library and how they are used. We have used keyword searching in the Almanac to find information and discovered that the Index is a handy tool. The Atlas is up next!
